We launched the Change Begins With Me campaign to provide individuals with a way to turn the excitement and momentum around President Obama's Inauguration into meaningful and concrete change for their communities. After the overwhelming response to our invitation for you to submit commitments for change, we decided to extend the campaign beyond the Inauguration and offer a chance to win a volunteer vacation adventure to New Orleans. And our randomly selected winner is...
Keisha McCoy-Wilson, a School Liaison Officer at a Military Installation in Columbia, South Carolina! Her commitment to change was:
“Assisting military families with the educational needs of dependant military children. Most of our military families go through a great deal of emotional distress. What a better way to assist our country than by pledging to help military children.”
Keisha says she decided to submit this commitment when she received an email from a military distribution list and realized it was an opportunity for her to share about the need for volunteers to help with in the educational development of military kids. As the link between the Army and the 34 public schools in her district, Keisha supports approximately 3,000 military-connected students in their educational pursuits. She plans to fulfill her commitment to change this year by continuously working with children and youth to make sure they have what they need to succeed.
As our Volunteer Vacation winner, Keisha and a guest will travel to New Orleans in April to participate in Jazz Fest and Global Youth Service Day. When asked what made her most excited about the trip, Keisha said “I’m looking forward to assisting wherever I can and meeting the many people who strive for a better tomorrow for children and youth, especially in disenfranchised locations.”
Thanks to everyone who participated in Change Begins With Me, and congratulations to all the winners of the weekly drawings for $250 Network for Good Cards. Reading through your commitments was more inspiring than we could have anticipated. Your creative and personal commitments to the environment, education, the elderly and everything in between will surely make a difference in your communities and beyond. I can’t wait to hear about how you are following through with your commitments throughout the year.
Although the contests are over, you can still make your public commitment to change, learn how to take action now, and read the thousands of commitments individuals have already made.
