During the launch of our Be Fearless campaign in June, we were very pleased to announce that the Case Foundation would be a principal sponsor of  TEDxMidAtlantic 2012 and that the renowned gathering would focus on the theme “Be Fearless.” Today, we’re excited to let you know that registration is open, an initial list of dynamic speakers is now available and for the first time ever the event will take place over two days, allowing for even more fearless speakers, artists, and thought leaders committed to spreading great ideas!

TEDxMidAtlantic has become an incredibly popular and widely-attended gathering in the national capital region, showcasing both the most celebrated and most unsung innovators, thinkers, activists, artists, philosophers, philanthropists, and entertainers from the MidAtlantic region and around the world. We’re proud to be a principal sponsor this year to lift up the concept of a fearless approach to creating social change, and to highlight changemakers who are making big bets, experimenting early and often, making failure matter, reaching beyond their bubbles and letting urgency conquer fear.

If you’re not already familiar with TED (“Technology, Entertainment, Design”), the organization challenges some of the brightest thinkers and doers of our time to give the “speech of their lives” in under 18 minutes. Combining packed gatherings around the globe with web-based videos that have been viewed millions of times, TED talks advance innovation and spark thoughtful conversations about issues that affect all of us.

TEDx events, the platform for TEDxMidAtlantic, allow people all over the world to join the TED community and to organize their own group of dynamic speakers to disseminate wisdom, humor, and insights about our world. The presenters in this fourth year of TEDxMidAtlantic will join the many amazing individuals who have spoken on the TED and TEDx stages, including Al Gore, Jane Goodall, and our very own Steve Case.

We will feature an equally inspiring group of speakers this year: firstly, we couldn't think of anyone better suited to share his thoughts on what it means to Be Fearless than four-star general, former Secretary of State, and committed philanthropist, General Colin Powell. The roster of great speakers doesn't end there — we'll also be joined by:

  • Jose Antonio Vargas, whose 2011 essay in The New York Times about his life as an undocumented immigrant sparked thousands of conversations about what it means to be an American
  • Business icon and philanthropist David Rubenstein, who is known both for building Carlyle Group and for his generous support of many charitable causes
  • Melody Barnes, former Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council under President Obama

Additionally, you will hear from Jack Andraka, a 15-year-old from Maryland who has developed a new tool for cancer screening that could revolutionize medicine, scientist and environmental activist Dr. Theo Colborn, and Share Our Strength founder Billy Shore will also address the audience. All of these dynamic and disruptive speakers will tackle the Be Fearless topic and provide fresh perspectives that will inspire and challenge attendees and viewers.

More than 1,000 attendees will join us for TEDxMidAtlantic: Be Fearless on October 26 and 27 at Sidney Harman Hall in Washington, DC. Click here to visit the TEDxMidAtlantic website, where you can learn about speakers and purchase tickets. If you can’t attend in person, TEDx will also be livestreamed, so you will still be able to watch the action.

Stay tuned for more great speaker announcements, and be sure to follow @CaseFoundation and @TEDxMidAtlantic on Twitter for updates. We can’t wait to see you there!
