Help the Twitterverse raise $500,000 for charity:water

On February 12, Twitter users in 160 cities around the world will come together to meet, greet -- and, if all goes well -- donate $500,000 to fund clean water worldwide. That’s a lot of money for one day. The beneficiary, charity: water, raised about $7 million over the last couple of years, so this is a substantial campaign for them.

Would you believe that charity: water didn’t start the campaign? Welcome to fundraising 2.0.

Twestival is a micro-donation campaign. Arranged around February 12 meetups (or “tweetups”), where folks gather for a drink or music or, say, an auction. Anybody can start their own local event, so agendas vary. But all proceeds go to charity: water, handled by TipJoy.

Beth Kanter has a terrific post about the origins of Twestival and some of the concerns it’s raised in the nonprofit and fundraising communities.

One thing is for sure, though—by easing up, charity: water has facilitated the campaign. With loose guidelines for individual events and gracious thank-you videos, they have let Twitter people and local organizers do what they do best. And given us all in the nonprofit and tech worlds lots to talk about.

I’ll be going to Twestival DC. How about you?
