
At the Case Foundation we are champions of all strategies that put citizens at the center of decision-making and empower them to take charge of the institutions that serve them and the problems that affect them. We launched this series, Citizen-Centered Solutions, to shine a spotlight on and take a critical look at the many new efforts that are igniting and embracing public participation.
Nonprofit video contests are great. I think they are the most interesting type of online contests, and not just because I like watching YouTube videos.
The benefits of crowdsourcing for crisis information were brought into the limelight in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, when Ushahidi, a platform originally developed to map reports of violence in Kenya after the post-election fallout in early 2008, was deployed to provide a map of vital information based on reports coming in from social media and other channels.
