Teaching Kids to Give: Resources

For Kids:

A Kid's Guide to Giving, by Freddi Zeiler (Innovative Kids, 2006). Written by a kid for kids, this book offers a comprehensible guide to giving money, volunteering, donating goods, and organizing charity events. Ages 10 and older.

The Giving Book: Open The Door To A Lifetime Of Giving, by Ellen Sabin (Watering Can Publishing, 2004). Geared toward readers aged 6 to 11, this interactive book helps children think about their wishes and dreams for the world, and how their actions can make those dreams come true.

Markmakers: The Place for Young People Making a Difference. This online giving site allows kids to donate to one of 40 causes by using a philanthropic gift certificate.

For Adults:

The Giving Family: Raising Our Children to Help Others, by Susan Crites Price (Council on Foundations, 2001). This guide gives parents, teachers, and community leaders tried-and-true ideas to instill the spirit of giving and volunteering in children.

Raising Kids Who Give, Share, and Care (Learning to Give Project). This online resource offers parents age-appropriate ways to teach kids about philanthropy.
