In the Case Foundation's work in Africa, along with every problem, we see numerous signs of hope. Access to clean water for a growing number of villages. A rural farmer whose flourishing crops enable him to send his children to school. Women assuming the highest positions in government.
With so many discouraging headlines about the continent, we took a step back to consider what makes us hopeful. When we talked to journalists, NGO leaders, philanthropists, business leaders, and others about Africa, four reasons for hope emerged:
People + Culture
Africa's culture is awe-inspiring and unique in the world, and its people are shaping a more positive future for themselves and future generations. Read why Chris Johns, editor-in-chief of National Geographic magazine, says effective solutions must begin with an understanding of the links between Africa's people, cultures, and wildlife. And learn how one man transformed his life with a simple technology produced by KickStart.
Innovation + Entrepreneurship
Advances in technology, medicine, and science -- combined with the entrepreneurial spirit of Africans -- are opening doors of opportunity throughout the continent. Inside, two experts with firsthand experience warn against approaches that are heavy on compassion but light on impact. Liberian-born Monique Maddy, entrepreneur-in-residence at Google, asks about what happens "After the Helicopter Leaves." In "More than Giving: A Business Approach to Philanthropy in Africa," Jacqueline Novogratz, head of Acumen Fund, calls for business-like solutions that recognize Africans as both consumers and problem-solvers. And read about how the PlayPumpTM water system is bringing clean water to Africa with the power of child's play.
Leadership
The long-term success of Africa will rely on the vision and strength of African leaders, and the commitment and talent of those leaders are evident in a number of sectors. We profile outstanding leaders in sports, entertainment, government, business, and the nonprofit sector. Read about a 7'2" basketball star, a former child soldier who's now a rapper, a female president, youth leaders, award-winning entrepreneurs, and many others.
Opportunity
