Following are just a few examples of organizations that can help you get involved by learning more volunteering, or contributing to innovative solutions. A good place to start for ideas and resources is Network for Good's Africa page. ![]() Michael Nichols, National Geographic Image Collection Learn MoreNational Geographic In September 2005, National Geographic magazine devoted its entire issue to Africa. Titled "Whatever you thought, think again," the issue explored several different aspects about the current state of Africa and offers a wealth of additional resources to learn more. Africa Renewal The Africa Renewal website is produced by the Africa Section of the United Nations Department of Public Information. It provides up-to-date information and analysis of economic reform, debt, education, health, women's advancement, conflict and civil strife, democratization, aid, investment, trade, regional integration, rural development, and many other topics. All Africa All Africa provides African news and information worldwide, serving as a helpful portal to learn more about current events across the continent. PBS PBS has an entire website dedicated to learning and exploring more about the many different countries, people, and cultures that make up Africa. Frimmel Smith ContributeGlobal Giving Not sure if your money will have a direct impact? Global Giving is a great website that helps donors find and contribute to projects that suit their passions. It's a safe and convenient way to directly support people and programs that are tackling real challenges in Africa and around the world. UniversalGiving UniversalGiving promotes volunteering and giving by allowing people to search online for organizations that need volunteers and financial contributions. Users can narrow a search by focus and geographic area, and find a wide array of charitable organizations. UniversalGiving ensures that all NGOs are identified by high-quality international interest groups and experts. The One Campaign The One Campaign is committed to rallying Americans to raise awareness about global poverty and to take action to address it. Visitors to the site can sign an online declaration committing themselves to make poverty history. DATA (Debt AIDS Trade Africa) DATA works to raise awareness about African issues and to increase support in the United States and abroad to find solutions. The organization works to inform citizens of wealthier countries to increase their grassroots support for better policies toward Africa, while also lobbying the governments of those countries to increase their funding and promote policies beneficial to Africa. Africa Grantmakers' Affinity Group The Africa Grantmakers' Affinity Group (AGAG) is a membership network of foundations that are currently funding in Africa or are interested in funding in Africa. AGAG was established as a forum for foundations to exchange information and work together to amplify current foundation funding and promote increased and more effective grantmaking in Africa to better address the continent's development challenges. VolunteerIdealist.org: Action Without Borders Idealist.org allows individuals to search for volunteer and internship opportunities with organizations around the world. Volunteers can search by location or interest area and follow links to find contact information and instructions on how to get involved. Habitat for Humanity International Habitat for Humanity's Global Village program and its International Volunteer program provide opportunities for volunteers to travel abroad to support Habitat's mission to provide decent, affordable housing for individuals and families around the world, including in Africa. The Global Village program sends groups of volunteers and a trained team leader abroad for about two weeks, while the International Volunteer program sends individuals and requires a 3- to 24-month commitment. VolunteerAbroad.com Through VolunteerAbroad.com, volunteers can search for programs based on location or interest area and are provided with a detailed summary of the program and application process along with information on the organization coordinating the trip. The site offers volunteer opportunities around the world, including many in Africa. Additionally, volunteer programs are verified by reputable organizations. |
